Loss Prevention

Vehicle crashes pose the greatest risk to your company. From a simple fender-bender backing into a dock to a critical crash involving serious injuries or fatalities, every vehicle-related incident puts your company in jeopardy. 

The Loss Prevention section focuses on preventing vehicle crashes before they occur. Emphasis is on proactive driver training. However, if a crash does happen, the tasks and resources below can also help minimize the loss.

1. Train drivers on crash prevention

To help support your accident prevention efforts, Great West provides a slew of safety products promoting this message. Three main resources you have at your disposal are the Accident Prevention Calendar, Value-Driven® Driving (VDD), and the Learning Library.

Accident Prevention Calendar

The Accident Prevention Calendar is a 12-month training schedule that focuses solely on preventing vehicle accidents. If you are not offering any kind of training, this would be a tool to help you get started. Each month focuses on a seasonal or industry-related topic, such as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The calendar includes one article with a five-question knowledge check, plus a video recommendation in the Learning Library, and a hands-on activity to further reinforce the message.

Value-Driven Driving

Value-Driven Driving is a comprehensive video series that is available in English and Spanish. VDD is ideal for new employee orientation, safety meetings, and post-crash retraining. Accompanying each video are training aids (driver notes and review questions) to reinforce the driver’s understanding of the material. The training aids can be downloaded from the portal (Risk Control > Value-Driven Company > Value-Driven Driving). The VDD modules include:

  • Introduction to Value-Driven Driving
  • Module 1: Preventing Rear-End Crashes
  • Module 2: Preventing Loss of Control Crashes
  • Segment 1 – Rollovers
  • Segment 2 – Jackknifes
  • Segment 3 – Lane Departures
  • Segment 4 – Steer Tire Blowouts
  • Module 3: Preventing Lane Change Crashes
  • Module 4: Preventing Run Under Crashes

Learning Library

The Learning Library is a FREE resource to all insureds. The library includes hundreds of safety-related videos that can be accessed 24/7 on any mobile device.

2. Communicate workplace safety to all employees

To help support your injury and illness prevention efforts, Great West provides several safety products promoting this message. Three main resources you have at your disposal are the Injury & Illness Prevention Calendar, Value-Driven® Life (VDL), and the Learning Library.

Injury & Illness Prevention Calendar

The Injury & Illness Prevention Calendar is a 12-month training schedule that focuses solely on preventing work-related incidents. If you are not offering any kind of injury and illness prevention training, this would be a tool to help you get started. Each month focuses on a seasonal or industry-related topic, such as Stress Awareness Month. The calendar includes one article with a five-question knowledge check, plus a video recommendation in the Learning Library, and a hands-on activity to further reinforce the message.

Value-Driven Life

Value-Driven Life is a comprehensive video series that is available in English and Spanish. VDL is ideal for all employees but focuses primarily on drivers and mechanics. Accompanying each video are training aids (driver notes and review questions) to reinforce the learner’s understanding of the material. The training aids can be downloaded from the portal (Risk Control > Value-Driven Company > Value-Driven Life).

The VDL modules include:

  • Module 1: Preventing Injuries Around the Truck
  • Module 2: Preventing Crash-Related Injuries
  • Module 3: Life on the Road

3. Report all accidents immediately to Great West

Reporting a crash as soon as possible but no later than 24 hours of the incident helps Great West resolve your claim more quickly. Options to consider that may help with your accident reporting:

  • Order accident kits. In the Insured Portal, navigate to Safety Services > Order Safety Products > Accident Kit to order your free accident kit. Place one kit in each truck. 
  • Train drivers on accident scene procedures. At a minimum, use the accident kit as a guide to train drivers on accident scene procedures. If you have a company procedure, use that.
  • Download Great West’s Prompt Claim Reporting brochure. In the
  •  Insured Portal, navigate to Safety Services > Downloads > Prompt Accident Reporting. Review this product and discuss the importance of timely accident reporting with your personnel.
